When I contacted the Ministry of Transportation in January 2012 to find out when they were going to implement the the new Zero5 law brought in by Allison Redford I was told there would be "lots of advance notice". I couldn't even find an article in the Edmonton Journal on Monday or Tuesday! And "advance notice" is 10 days? What a joke.
Anyways, the new tougher restrictions for impairment at Zero8 will kick-in July 1, 2012. For the first DUI that means an indefinite Drivers Licence suspension until the charge is dealt with in court, a 3 day vehicle seizure/impound and if found guilty - 1 yr *Blowlock. (The second DUI will be 7day vehicle seizure/impound and 3 yr *Blowlock while the 3rd DUI will be another 7 day seizure/impound and 5 yr *Blowlock.) *Up from 6mth Blowlock for all incidents. Annual cost of "Blowlock" is about $1,600 (Application fee $100, Install $200, Rental Monthly 12x$105) excluding Restricted License registration ($?) and Planning Ahead test at $250 (first time offense) or Impact test at $700 (second offense or more).
On September 1, 2012 the Zero5 limit will be introduced as "Intoxicated but not Impaired" and first incident will mean a 3 day drivers license suspension and 3 day vehicle seizure/impound. (Second will be 15 day DL Suspension and 7 day Vehicle seizure/impound while third Zero5 incident will be 30 day DL suspendsion and same 7 day Vehicle seizure/impound.) Vehicle Tow is about $90 and Impound charges $90/day, so 3 days = $360, 7 days $729
For new drivers under Graduated Drivers License (GDL) system - ANY Blood Alcohol will mean a 30 day Licence suspension and 7 day Vehicle #seizure. (#new)
EXTRA BONUS - 24hr suspension if Drivers ability to operate is impaired by by drugs, alcohol, #a medical condition or #physical ability. This is a change from before.
